In the modern world, personal computers, tablets, smartphones and other visual devices have become a significant and normal part of everyday home, social and work life. This usage has increased substantially across all age groups in recent years, with global data showing that adults can typically spend more than five hours a day on screens, and some reports of up to seven or more hours a day across all digital devices.
Although there has been an increase in the use of devices for professional, office and home use, there has also been a 39% increase in gaming globally. In Australia, two-thirds of the population now play video games, but it is not only children and teenagers, 68% are working-age adults.
What are the effects of prolonged screen exposure?
The increased time in front of computers and other screens means greater exposure to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit ultraviolet light including short-wavelength light.
Prolonged exposure to these screens is the most common cause of eye strain and can occur in people who look at screens for two or more hours a day. This is called ‘digital eye strain’.
It has been reported in a global survey that up to 78% of people are affected by eye strain, and it is the number one issue experienced by gamers across Australia, China,
Singapore and Malaysia.
Eye strain signs and symptoms include:
- sore, burning or itching
- eyes
- watery or dry eyes
- difficulty concentrating
- tired eyes - difficulty
keeping them open Additionally, the increased demand for screens on our eyes can lead to an increased mental load - eye strain can equal brain strain. In a global survey, some people also found that the time spent looking at screens was physically draining.
What nutrients relieve eye strain and support eye health?
Prolonged exposure to light from digital devices has the potential to cause light-induced damage to cells in the retina and macula of the inner eye. This part of the eye contains yellow pigments called lutein and zeaxanthin that absorb and filter light. As the retina is exposed to intense light, uses a lot of oxygen and contains high levels of polyunsaturated fats, it is prone to free radical damage called oxidative stress. A powerful antioxidant, lutein helps reduce eye strain, supports macula and retina health, and maintains healthy vision. Other important antioxidants are vitamin C and astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid pigment found in microalgae. It is a potent antioxidant and can help relieve eye strain (including tired eyes) by relaxing the eye muscles
and improving the blood supply to the retina. Vitamin C is an antioxidant found in the lens of the eye. It acts like a physiological “sunscreen†to protect the lens from free radical formation caused by incoming UV light. As we age the vitamin C levels in the lens decrease.
How can energy levels and mental focus also be supported?
Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, is an essential nutrient for health and may support the lowered energy and mental load often seen with prolonged digital screen use. Numerous biochemical pathways rely on vitamin B5 availability for energy production. It is essential for the production of a substance called coenzyme A, which is necessary for the production of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins. It is also needed
for information processing within the brain and the production of the cognition neurotransmitter (or nerve cell communicator) called acetylcholine, which is important for mental function.
